Lose Pounds, Breathe Easier

A new study in the journal Chest found that 36 percent of overweight individuals who were diagnosed with asthma and taking medications to control it didn’t actually have the disease. What gives?

Excess weight can decrease lung volume, causing wheezing and breathlessness – symptoms similar to those of asthma, explains study author Stephen Scott, M.D. If you have trouble breathing, visit a pulmonologist; the doctor will decide whether to perform a lung function test, which provides a much more accurate diagnosis than relying on symptoms alone.

If excess weight has you out of breath, it’s never too late to make a change. Drop extra pounds with our training and meal plans. You can do this!
